Locality: Wash Water is just west of Newbury off the A34. Shopping in Newbury and Basingstoke. Visit the website www.oakleyfarm.co.uk for details.

Newbury was the site of two Civil War battles; the first Battle of Newbury (at Wash Common) in 1643 and the second Battle of Newbury (at Speen) in 1644. The nearby Donnington Castle was reduced to a ruin in the aftermath of the second battle.

The West Berkshire Museum in Newbury is well worth a visit and is housed in two of Newbury's most historic buildings. The Cloth Hall was built in 1626-1627 as a cloth factory and workhouse. The Corn Stores (also known as the Granary) was built circa 1725 following the opening of the River Kennet Navigation. See www.westberkshiremuseum.org.uk for more details.
